Improving Your Personal Appearance

How much time do you put into the way you look every day? While this number is different for everyone, investing some time into your appearance can really help you to go out into the world more confidently and feel better about yourself. I started going to spas and salons a few months back, and it was really nifty to see how many services they offered that could really improve my life. I decided that it would be incredible to work with other people to teach them about spas and salons, since they can make you feel renewed and refreshed.

3 Treatments That Can Smooth And Repair Damaged Hair

Lena Griffin

Is your hair frizzy, dry, and damaged? Achieving a beautiful style is really tough when your hair is coarse and riddled with split ends. Luckily, there are a few treatments you can try, both at home and in the hair salon, to restore your hair's moisture levels and help repair damage.

1. Deep Conditioning

Look for a good-quality deep conditioner. One that has a really creamy consistency and comes in a tub rather than a bottle should do the trick. Apply the conditioner according to instructions on the package. Deep conditioners impart your hair with fatty acids and proteins that help seal the cuticle, which is the hair's outer covering, to yield a smoother look. Deep conditioning also helps form a protective layer over your hair so it does not suffer more damage when exposed to heat from a styling tool or from sunlight. Make sure you deep condition once a week until your hair is back in good shape. Then keep up with this habit once a month.

2. Keratin Treatments

You can visit your salon for what is known as a keratin treatment. This remedy works especially well for damaged, curly locks that are becoming frizzy and unruly. Keratin is a protein found in hair. When your hair becomes damaged, it often gets depleted of keratin. By adding keratin back to the hair, these treatments add weight to the hair shaft, so it stays straighter and does not get as frizzy. Keratin treatments do not necessarily repair the damage, but they do make it a lot less obvious. Your hair will be straighter after a keratin treatment, so be prepared for this change.

3. Hot Oil Treatments

If you have really coarse hair, your salon professional may recommend what's called a hot oil treatment. Olive, almond, or coconut oil will be warmed up and then rubbed into your scalp and the ends of your hair. The oil will hydrate your hair, making it shiny and helping to repair the damaged cuticles. After letting the oil sit in your hair for 10 or 15 minutes, your hair stylist will shampoo it away with a gentle, hydrating shampoo. You can have this done at a salon, but there are also at-home hot oil treatments you can use if you're on a budget. Just make sure you follow package instructions closely to avoid hair that looks like an oil slick.
